Practitioners will be familiar with the book ‘Physical Signs of Child Sexual Abuse’, also known as the ‘purple book’. It includes good practice in relation to the paediatric forensic examination where there are concerns about child sexual abuse. It also provides an evidenced-based review of the interpretation of physical signs.

This webinar will be an indispensable guide to the 2023 edition and will be of interest to any lawyer involved in children proceedings whether public or private and where allegations of a sexual abuse are made.

We are very fortunate that Dr Jo Gifford has agreed to present. Dr Gifford is a Consultant Paediatrician and the Designated Doctor for Child Safeguarding for Coventry and Warwickshire. She is an experienced Paediatric Forensic Medical Examiner. Jo is the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) Expert Lead on Child Sexual Abuse, a role which includes providing paediatric advice to the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine, and to NHSE. Trained in Critical Appraisal of the published literature, she is an Expert Reviewer for the RCPCH Systematic Reviews of Child Protection Evidence, which cover physical abuse and neglect, and is Co-Lead on the 3rd edition of The Physical Signs of Child Sexual Abuse: An Evidence-based Review and Guidance for Best Practice (commonly known as “The Purple Book”).
